3 exceptional twins on both sides of Nigeria that are women
Multiple twin births in a southern community has been attributed to the slippery Ilasa soup the women eat there.
Even though some past cultures erroneously labelled them a source of misfortune, twins maintain their ringer element as the symbol of celebration long into 21st-century Nigeria, both in its northern and southern parts.
In the southwest, specifically in Ibadan, Oyo State, there is a Land of Twins, Igbo-Ora which is known for its unusually high twin birth rate. This rare quality has been attributed to the slippery Ilasa soup the women eat. That is the explanation for why the territory is so familiar with multiple births.
According to BBC’s The Documentary presented by the journalist Peter Mcjob before entering the middle of May, practically every household in Igbo-Ora has a member who was born twins.

No doubt, among these numerous pairs, some have risen to prominence in life, carving out exceptional careers that have brought them national and international acclaim, but here we are reviewing a much wider spread. They are not camera-shy and represent two sides of Nigeria as follows.
1. The Cinematic Anekes
Chidinma and Chidiebere Aneke are known as the Aneke Twins. Born in Enugu, they have become two of the most recognisable faces in Nollywood these past years. Their journey in the cinematic world has been marked by a series of successful roles that showcase their talent and versatility. These Igbo Twins have graced the screens with their performances and they are also live behind the camera, churning out and directing films that reflect the rich narratives of Nigerian life.
2. Kanny Queens
And then Kannywood have the sisters, Hassana and Hussaina Musa Abdullahi on their resume and that is so much credit since these rising stars have captivated audiences with their performances. Their presence extends beyond the silver screen to social media, where they engage with fans and showcase their craft.
3. One and All
Back in the southwest, there is Kehinde Bankole, a celebrated Nigerian actress and her sister who came to the world first, Taiwo. Both sisters have made an impact as entertainment figures. Kehinde’s recent accolade as the Best Lead Actress at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for her role in ADIRE is a testament to her exceptional talent. Meanwhile, Taiwo has established herself as a respected entrepreneur and event planner.
The success of these twins is not just a testament to their talents but also reflects that twins in Nigeria are greatly valued. In Yoruba culture, twins are considered a blessing, and their names—Taiwo and Kehinde—carry profound meanings.
Taiwo is the one who gets the first taste of the world and soon Kehinde follows. This cultural reverence for twins is celebrated annually in Igbo-Ora with a festival that honours this unique aspect of their heritage.
