Lagosians no longer to see chaotic yellow buses – instead it would be the courteous ones

The rearrangement due to happen in Lagos is going on alongside city officials picking up the pace to ensure that the diesel-powered intra-city Red Line Rail commissioned by President Bola Tinubu on 29 April can enter use.

The city officials in Lagos have their eyes fixed on organised mobility; first, it was making sure they have buses, ferries and rail carriages they can control before they focus on the rowdy yellow buses that now have to operate a certain way if they want to remain on the road.

It is what the Bus Reform Initiative wants to make happen via a more organised and systematic approach to city transport. A pilot programme set to commence along the Lekki-Epe corridor was disclosed by Mr Dele Giwa, who is the special adviser on transportation matters to Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu.

The initiative was further elaborated upon during a pivotal meeting between key transport ministry representatives and members of the state’s road transport union on Thursday, 27 June. Mr Sola Giwa outlined broad changes.

In this new era, there would be the re-registration and re-certification of all buses. This ensures that every vehicle within the system meets the new standards of operation.

A cornerstone of the initiative is the introduction of an e-ticketing system, which promises to streamline the payment process and reduce transactional chaos. Additionally, the provision of transport infrastructure, regulation, and standardisation of bus operations will elevate the quality of transportation services across the city.

Systematic framework to address these challenges have been mapped out, shares Mr Giwa and he says this will include deployment of high-capacity buses on the corridor as stated in the Lagos Transport Policy and the Bus Route Network.

In addition, there will be the re-allocation and relocation of Korope/Minibuses to the inner route, re-registration and recertification of all buses.

Others are the introduction of e-ticketing system, provision of transport infrastructure, regulation and standardisation of bus operations, improvement of transportation services and promotion of security of lives and properties along the Lekki-Epe corridor.

As Lagosians anticipate the roll-out of reformed yellow buses in the Lekki axis, other locations should expect that it will be their turn soon.
