Netflix’s “The Origin: Madam Koi-Koi” fits a heart that can withstand Nigerian horror

Herein lies the horrific trajectory of the 31 October released flick that already has the audience glued.

A not-too-distant past set in the 90s pivots into the inner premises of a remote Christian mission secondary school where all sorts of atrocities take place among the students, particularly sexual violence. All the events would lead to fatal consequences in a Nollywood Netflix two-part film, “The Origin: Madam Koi-Koi” which has been topping the charts since it debuted on the streaming service on Halloween’s Day three weeks ago.

Under the stewardship of a condescending Mother Superior (Ireti Doyle) as the principal of the school, district education officers were left feeling unconvinced about the safety of the learners under her care. A gang raping incident eventually sets the tragedy in play after a male student named ID was murdered in a bush. The moment leading to this demise was shortly after he set up a classmate, Ibukun to be sexually assaulted at a spot with his group of friends.

As the nemesis unfolds, the audience watching the two-part series would notice cover-up, and laxity by Sister Jane, the Mother Superior whose negligence makes a permanent victim out of Ibukun after she was raped by her peers who escaped rebuke. That launched the background in the Jay Franklyn Jituboh and Dale Falola co-produced picture that draws its plot in the southwest Nigeria fictional town of Malomo and further explores the morphing of a mythical ghostly figure Madam Koi-Koi who is known to haunt boarding school dormitories, hallways and toilets at night or sometimes day time.

The Netflix series brought these characterisations into motion, therefore connecting a younger generation born late into the 2000s to a mystical past. The actor Deyemi Okanlowo who plays the hair-grooming detective identified as Inspector Theophilus Achebe alongside his colleague Inspector Oscar Akintoye by Baaj Adebule had to search for answers as the drama unfolds. A reluctant new female student Amanda (Martha Ehinome) has been watching it all in her nightmarish dreams that reveal the dreaded Madam Koi-Koi in the flesh.

Herein lies the horrific trajectory of the 31 October released flick that already has the audience glued. It is obvious on Netflix’s weekly top list of television shows that “The Origin: Madam Koi-Koi” is the most viewed and winning against nine other listings.

One of the film’s producers, Jay Franklyn Jituboh can see his work gaining strength every day since it dropped. That motivated the Instagram post telling his followers, “3 Weeks strong and still standing at NUMBER (1) ONE. The ORIGIN: MADAM KOI-KOI The gift that keeps giving.”

The tail end of The Origin revealed a nightmare that will persist with the recording of more deaths. How will this intense story end for the formation involved?

What the TV show indicated in the first part is that there will be no escape for the devilish minds lying in plain sight behind the camera. A visit to the film’s ending shows how it all began with the nighttime raping act by a trio of grown men. That brought on a conjuring that won’t hold back on serving justice when evil has been done.
