Nigeria to mark 25 years of interplanetary exploration by sending citizens to space

Clarity about an imminent journey into space is happening barely under a month after President Bola Tinubu appointed a new head to supervise the National Space Research and Development Agency.

Future interplanetary probes by Nigerian entities look to have reached an unprecedented level of sophistication with the announcement today that citizens would soon be able to fly out into space for solar system missions that will improve their country’s standing in science and development.

A partnership between the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and the Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) based in the United States would have made this possible.

Information about this bold move surfaced on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, after an agreement between both agencies in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja was sealed.

Newly appointed NASRDA’s director general Dr Mathew Adepoju confirmed this development as a remarkable achievement following space research in the country that has been going on for a quarter of a century.

This collaboration, which is coming to the country, says Dr Adepoju, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s 25th anniversary of [the] Space Exploration journey and opens new opportunities for scientific research and technological advancement.

Clarity about an imminent journey into space is happening barely under a month after the National Space Research and Development Agency head’s appointment by President Bola Tinubu who is currently away from the country for the inauguration of his South African colleague Cyril Ramaphosa starting a new 5-year term.

President Tinubu’s eyes at the signing of an agreement in Abuja as to be expected was the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji who pointed out that having such development in Nigeria would inspire the birth of a new wave of scientists to join the country’s blooming thirst to answer space-bound questions like the advanced civilisations have been known to do.
