A Simple Lie: An epic movie to watch

A simple lie, a Biodun Stephen-directed flick, tells the story of Boma (Bisola Aiyeola), a successful woman who sadly falls into the overused Nollywood trope of looking for love. It is her desperation that drives her to tell an ill-thought-out lie when she runs into Xavier (Kachi Nnochiri) to get him to stay longer with her. The repercussions of this lie have a ripple effect when Azeem (Emmanuel Ikubese), Boma’s best friend, Donna (Bolaji Ogunmola) his wife, a life coach who has had a falling out with Boma, and Fade (Bukunmi “Kie-Kie” Adeaga-Ilori), Boma’s fun friend, all find themselves at Boma’s house. Secrets are revealed, tense conversations ensue, and revelations come to light as a result of that one simple lie.

A Simple Lie mostly takes place in one location. Why this is notable is that Biodun Stephen has done what so many other directors in Nollywood struggle to do, which is to tell a story beautifully. The characters are fully formed, believable, 3D individuals, and the people who play them do not fall into the trap of overacting, which is fantastic because this plot does not need it. As the story progresses and truths come to light, the smart use of flashbacks scenes to give the audience a look into the past is a smart choice. It adds color to the film and serves as an interest boost in places the plot would have otherwise lagged.

Bisola Aiyeola is a formidable actress whose prowess translates onscreen in her many movies. She pulls off the role with ingenuity and subtlety, drawing the audience into what could have been a farce. Instead, we understand her motivations and more or less root for her throughout the film.

A Simple Lie is out in cinemas and is highly recommended if you are a fan of subtle twists and turns and a smartly done plot.
