Background

The Sungba crooner, Asake has returned with his top-charting song 2:30, which was announced on April 5, 2023. A few days after the song’s release, it surpassed Davido’s trending single, Unavailable to claim the top slot on Spotify’s top Nigerian weekly chart, where it is still comfortably sitting with over a million Spotify listens. As a follow-up to his first single of 2023, Yoga, Ahmed Ololade, also known as Asake or Mr Money,  demonstrated his lyrical skill by conveying his message using the Yoruba language and harmoniously blending it with the pidgin language.

About ‘2:30’

Asake, as always, didn’t mince words in his latest track. He eulogises himself, describing as king, a gift that he said was inborn. Like in Yoga, he sends a clear message to those against him, that he can’t be touched. He praises and acknowledges God’s grace and how far he has come and how he has become a thing of pride to his country.

Furthermore, he references the wickedness of the world saying one must follow certain principles and wisdom in order to succeed. Asake talks about the fruits of his hard work and diligence and he would continue to keep improving himself no matter the challenges. As always, he doesn’t fail to mention that he loves to have fun because that results from his hard work.

The lyrics goes thus:

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

2:30 felu, oya k’a turn up, kile t’o mo (It is about to clock 2:30. Let us turn up before the day breaks)

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

2:30 felu, oya k’a turn up, kile t’o mo (It is about to clock 2:30. Let us turn up before the day breaks)

Opinion

Some Asake’s fans weren’t surprised when his song navigated to the number one spot shortly after its release. Others wondered if Asake would be able to sustain this winning streak and claim to stardom. However, this only sends the pointer and indication that we are yet to see the best of Mr Money as the sky is not a limit.

2:30 is currently streaming on Spotify and Apple Music. Go and give it a listen.
