On March 13, 2025, Shell officially finalised the sale of The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) to Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited. This momentous acquisition marks a transformative milestone in the Nigerian oil and gas industry, as Renaissance Africa—a consortium of indigenous investors—takes bold strides into a promising new era.

This shift has sparked enthusiasm and support from key stakeholders, notably the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).

During a visit to the Board’s Nigerian Content Tower (NCT) office in Swali, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, executives from Renaissance Africa Energy Company received assurances from the NCDMB Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, regarding collaboration and alignment with the consortium’s vision and long-term growth plans.

Engr. Ogbe also underscored the Board’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for indigenous oil and gas companies. His words carried encouragement for Renaissance Africa Energy and other local enterprises to position themselves to thrive within the framework that the NCDMB aims to facilitate a double-enabling environment for the players.

According to its executive secretary, the NCDMB is fully prepared to engage with the company whenever the need arises, reinforcing mutual trust and collaboration within the sector. He further commended the capable professionals employed by the consortium, many of whom have held key positions within the oil and gas industry with proven track records of success.

A promising vision for Nigeria and Africa

Dr. Tony Attah, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, shared the consortium’s mission, saying: We invest in Nigeria but represent Nigerian Content across Africa.

Renaissance’s mission, says the managing director, is to be the African leader in energy, but most importantly, to enable energy security and industrialisation.

With the support the NCDMB has promised to provide, Dr. Attah could only convey the feeling of appreciation before the chairman of the Renaissance Group, Dr. Layi Fatona, could take the stage.

Eventually, when the chairman took his turn at speaking, he took the opportunity to project great optimism over what the consortium had achieved. In the group, Dr. Fatona sees the ability to maintain and strengthen the relationship SPDC previously enjoyed with the NCDMB.

He recalled the Board’s support of SPDC operations and reiterated expectations that the new company would benefit from similar collaboration in its future endeavours.

After this future-thinking projection by the chairman, it was the NCDMB’s General Manager, Corporate Communications and Zonal Coordination Barr. Esueme Dan Kikile rounding off the brief. He was able to emphasise how deeply aligned the Board is when it comes to Renaissance Africa Energy’s vision once again.

Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited comprises four leading indigenous oil companies—ND Western Limited, Aradel Holdings, FIRST Exploration and Petroleum Development Company Limited (FIRST E&P), and Waltersmith Group—alongside international partner Petroni.

This diverse and accomplished consortium aims to deliver innovative energy solutions that benefit Nigeria while positioning itself as a leader across Africa.
