Every year that passes in this 21st Century makes it obvious that Africans are to be manning significant posts that matter for shaping the world into a better place. They are out there in the diaspora making sure to make their continent and country proud, just like Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola ‘DJ Cuppy’ has been credited through the Best of Africa Awards that was held at a London hotel on 1 October.
DJ Cuppy received the Philanthropic Endeavour Leadership Award and it is not a surprise how come. With hundreds of thousands of young Africans studying outside the continent’s shores, finishing their programmes might face obstacles that are connected to financing, for example, and this is where the recipient has shown huge potential.
On Instagram this past Saturday was where DJ Cuppy shared a note about her accomplishment from a week before, which reads that she is “[honoured] to receive the ‘Philanthropic Endeavour Leadership Award’” and then goes on to say that her ties with Africa “is truly my greatest superpower!”
In 2018, she founded the Cuppy Foundation, which focuses on improving access to education.

The foundation has developed the Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx), which is a University of Oxford cross-university platform. Through financing, it supports research between the University of Oxford and African universities and seeks to strengthen the avenues through which there can be an increase in the number of African students pursuing postgraduate degrees in Oxford. Thankfully, through the team focus, much of this has been achieved, and this is why Cuppy is getting the recognition she deserves.
Since it was Nigeria’s Independence Day anniversary on the Saturday that the awards event took place, DJ Cuppy was prepared to look the part. She did that under a headtie and a lilac aso oke traditional attire that bore stripes of embroidery.
What else could be missing? Her earrings, of course, wear the shape of the continent of Africa. Right there was a picture of DJ Cuppy in her superpower mode and we love her for it.
