Black Market draws 51,000 viewers and breaks a Guinness World Record.

A movie premiere at Tafawa Balewa Square drew more than 51,000 viewers and turned a night of entertainment into a Guinness World Records moment.

At most movie premieres, the film takes centre stage. At Black Market, the crowd became part of the story.

On Saturday, September 26, thousands of people gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos to watch the Nollywood crime thriller together, turning what was planned as a Guinness World Records attempt into a record-breaking night.

Guinness World Records has officially recognised 51,258 qualifying viewers at the screening, making Black Market the film with the largest attendance at a single-location screening. The number surpassed the previous record of 43,624 people, set in 2015 when the Filipino film Felix Manalo was screened at the Philippine Arena.

The audience made history

The gates at Tafawa Balewa Square opened at about 2pm, with the red carpet beginning around 3pm. Music, food and games filled the hours before the main attraction, while movie lovers arrived in large numbers for the screening. The film itself was scheduled to begin at about 7pm.

The event was initially designed around a target of 50,000 viewers, enough to beat the existing record. It eventually went beyond that target.

How the record-breaking night began

The event was planned around a target of 50,000 viewers, with activities beginning before the main screening.

Gates opened at about 2 pm, followed by a red carpet from around 3 pm. Music, food and games kept the crowd engaged before the film began at approximately 7 pm.

Reports estimated that about 64,000 people attended the wider event, but Guinness counted 51,258 for the record because viewers had to remain for the entire film to qualify.

That distinction matters. The record was not simply about how many people entered Tafawa Balewa Square. It was about how many stayed to watch the film from start to finish.

The movie that drew the crowd

Black Market is a crime thriller directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, who also co-wrote the film with Abdul Tijani-Ahmed.

The story follows five women involved in a cross-border smuggling operation. Their business takes a dangerous turn when the daughter of one of the women is kidnapped, forcing the group to deal with a threat that reaches beyond their illegal trade.

The film features actors including Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Lateef Adedimeji, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini, popularly known as Itele D Icon, and Uzor Arukwe.

Behind the production are Rixel Studios, FilmOne Studios and Signet Ring Studios, while Switch Visuals Production was involved in staging the record-breaking event.

When the audience became the record

Nollywood has spent decades building audiences across Nigeria and beyond. This time, the audience itself became the record.

The Black Market screening did not measure the film by box-office revenue or cinema tickets sold across different locations. It measured how many people could come together in one place and watch the same film from beginning to end.

It also shows how a Nigerian film can become more than a two-hour story on a screen. It can become an event, a gathering and, in this case, a Guinness World Records moment.

At Tafawa Balewa Square, more than 51,000 people did not just turn up for a movie. They became part of the movie’s history.
