Davido joins GRAMMY voting member, strengthening Afrobeats’ global voice

Nigerian star joins the Recording Academy’s voting ranks, giving Afrobeats a stronger voice ahead of the 2026 GRAMMY Awards.

Afrobeats star Davido has scored another career milestone as he has been confirmed as a voting member of the Recording Academy, the institution that organises the GRAMMY Awards. His inclusion not only elevates his global standing but also places Nigerian music more firmly within one of the world’s most influential cultural platforms.

The announcement was made on Tuesday through the Academy’s official Instagram page, where Davido appeared alongside other new members. The Academy noted that voting members play a crucial role in shaping nominations and final winners, describing the process as central to how music’s highest honours are decided.

For Davido, who picked up three GRAMMY nominations in 2024, this recognition goes beyond personal achievement. “Understanding the importance of how our voices are heard, I am participating in the GRAMMY Award process. It is a game-changer. I have learned that voting empowers you to have a say in what is considered and voted on in each season. I am honoured to be part of the Recording Academy community, and I look forward to voting,” he said.

The development comes as Afrobeats continues to gain ground worldwide. Nigerian acts like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Tems have already made their presence felt on the GRAMMY stage.

In recent years, the Academy has widened its membership to include more international professionals in order to diversify perspectives and reflect the industry’s global reach. Davido’s acceptance into this circle further strengthens Nigeria’s role in that shift.

Voting for the 2026 GRAMMY Awards will begin on October 3, giving Davido and other members a chance to directly influence the outcome of music’s most recognised awards. For Nigerian fans, it is a reminder that the country’s sound is no longer just making waves abroad, it is now helping shape decisions at the very centre of global music.
