FG declares Friday a public holiday for Eid al-Mawlid

Government calls on Nigerians to embrace unity and peace as Muslims mark the Prophet’s birth

Nigerians can look forward to a long weekend, as the Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In the statement, the government congratulated Muslims across the country and in the diaspora, encouraging them to emulate the Prophet’s values of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.

“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration,” the statement added.

But the message went beyond well wishes. The Federal Government also called on Nigerians of all faiths to seize the opportunity to pray for peace, security, and stability in the nation, while supporting collective efforts to strengthen unity and foster development.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, which falls in the third month of the Islamic calendar (Rabi’ al-Awwal), is a significant date for Muslims globally. In Nigeria, where the holiday is officially recognised, it is typically marked with prayers, lectures, processions, and charitable acts.

Beyond its religious importance, the holiday has also become a moment when leaders and citizens alike call for national unity. At a time when Nigeria continues to wrestle with economic strains and security concerns, Friday’s observance will likely carry an added weight of reflection and hope.

For many families, however, the holiday will simply mean a day to gather, pray, celebrate, and pause from the hustle of daily life, a reminder of how faith and community continue to shape the rhythm of the nation.
