Five secret home remedies to eliminate backaches

By Esther Olamoyegun

Backaches, also known as low back pain or lumbar pain, are a common condition that can range from mild discomfort to severe and debilitating pain.

Back aches are caused by several reasons like muscle strain,  overstretching, tearing of muscles or ligaments in the back due to lifting heavy objects, sudden movements, or poor posture. Back aches could also be caused by herniated or bulging discs that can put pressure on the nerves in the spine. The most common cause of back aches are injuries and accidents that might affect one’s overall posture.

Symptoms of Backaches:

  1. Dull, aching pain in the lower back.
  2. Pain that radiates down the leg (sciatica) if the nerves are affected.
  3. Stiffness and limited range of motion.
  4. Muscle spasms in the back.
  5. Difficulty standing or sitting for long periods.

Home Remedies

While home remedies can provide temporary relief for backaches, it’s important to note that chronic or severe back pain should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Here are some secret home remedies that may help alleviate mild backaches:

  1. Hot or Cold Compresses: Applying a hot or cold compress to the affected area can help reduce inflammationand provide temporary relief. Use an ice pack wrapped in a cloth or a heating pad, and apply it to your back for about 15-20 minutes at a time.
  2. Stretching and Exercise: Gentle stretching exercises can help relieve muscle tension and improve flexibility. Consider activities like yoga, pilates, or tai chi, which focuses  on strengthening the core and promoting spinal health. Consult a professional or search for specific exercises targeting back pain relief.
  3. Epsom Salt Bath: Soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salt can help relax muscles and reduce pain. Add 1-2 cups of Epsom salt to warm bathwater and soak for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Herbal Remedies: Certain herbal remedies may help reduce inflammation and relieve back pain. Examples include applying arnica gel or cream topically, using turmeric as a natural anti-inflammatory, or drinking herbal teas like chamomile or ginger for their soothing properties. However, consult with a healthcare professional before using any herbal remedies, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or on medications.
  5. Proper Posture: Maintaining good posture throughout the day can help prevent or alleviate backaches. Sit and stand with your back straight, shoulders relaxed, and feet flat on the ground.
