‘Folake’, another banger by Boy Spyce is inspiring
By Naomi Salami
Song Title: Folake
Artist: Boy Spyce
Genre: Afrobeats
Release Date: 26, January 2023
Music label: Mavin Records
Background
The name Folake is definitely not new on the lips of popular Nigerian artistes. It has become sort of a cliche among Afrobeat artistes who have over-stretched the Yoruba name. From the catchy Buju and Pheelz’s Finesse to Tekno’s hit single, Pana, Folake, again, reared its head in 2023 and is now the title of Boy Spyce’s hit single, Folake.
Emerging artiste, Gbekile David Osemeke, who goes by his stage name, Boy Spyce is fast making a name for himself in the entertainment industry shortly after he came on board Don Jazzy’s record label, Mavin Records. He was signed into the Mavin family on the 14th of April, 2022 and immediately released his debut EP (extended playlist) on the 23rd of April, 2022.
He is known for being a singer in Mavins records’ tenth-anniversary single, Won Da Mo, Overloading, and Carry me go. His other singles include Bad things, Nobody, You, Destiny, and Smile.

About ‘Folake’
The lyrics of the single tell the tale of how he is hopelessly in love with a lady called Folake. Despite the bad reputation she seems to have, especially among those who tried their luck on her but failed, he is unfazed by the rumours and still strongly believes that he has a chance with her. The song is filled with a lot of street slang, but the artiste effortlessly passes his message along nicely.
The lyrics goes thus:
Folake don pompous
She don dey drive Brabus so
She no dey talk to us again
She no dey come campus again
Them say she go do runs
And her hippopo don tamus (ou ou ou ou)
And her kini dey cause virus ewe
They just dey talk jargons
Cos na she wey dey make my heart beat
Parara rara rara rara
Na she make my heart beat
Parara rara rara rara
Opinion
Folake has been on non-stop replay on popular music streaming platforms. Its replayability is why it has been on the lips of various afrobeat lovers and guys who can easily relate to the lyrics of the song, perhaps because they may have found themselves in this condition at one point in their lives. The song may not be number one on the charts but it’s worth the while listening to it.
