As of Monday, 30 October, a visual and 2D artist, Lola Mewu had just hit the 42-hour mark with only thirty more to go as she attempts to break a Guinness World Records painting marathon lasting up to 72 hours.

To reach her target at the SafeHouse Restaurant & Bar in Victoria Island, Lagos, a bit of light stretches and back-rubbing from her team of supporters was needed. This apparently improved her motivation, spurring the painter to exceed the initial target she had set beginning the challenge two days prior.

Auctioning her creativity is part of the boxes that Miss Mewu needed to check before she would be deemed to have broken a previous record set between the 3rd and 5th of October 2013 by Belgian Roland Palmerts who had produced 60 paintings under the same amount of hours.

For the auctioning aspect, art collectors who were following the efforts in Lagos as well as the online space, loved her work because they are relatable. Like Iya Risi who serves delicious local cuisine and Sisi Nene with her full-blown Afro hair – they were part of the characters that made this latest exhibition worthwhile for observers. The goal was for the artist to round up her pursuits by Tuesday, but she opted to continue. Now, the Guinness World Records candidate has reached 82 hours spent painting.

Perhaps, it helped that Lola Mewu was getting so much inspiration from celebrities and notable people who have been in her shoes. The professional dancer, Dr Kaffy Shafau, who is a record holder herself for participating and emerging the winner in 2006 of the Longest Dance Party, dialled in via video call to offer words of encouragement.

I’m here with you in the spirit and I can’t wait for you to be a fellow world Guinness record holder,” says the quite enthusiastic Dr Shafau who was urging her to “just keep pushing it”, and that was what eventually happened. Miss Mewu had pushed it and exceeded all her objectives relating to setting new accomplishments.

Recently, it was chef Hilda Baci launching a cook-a-thon On Thursday, 11 May 2023.

Her target was to deliver a 96-hour cooking exhibition but she ended up keeping the stove on for 100 hours and 40 minutes. What a feat that resulted in spreading the thirst for greatness among Nigerian youths.
