House of Gaa reveals cancel culture failing to put down Toyin Abraham for good

Nigerian cinema audiences seem to have a longing for period pieces based on the recent reception past examples have received but it is not only just this that is driving interest in the House of Gaa flick.

Even though she allegedly got someone’s mother arrested over a cyberbullying matter three days ago, there is not enough force to succeed it seems for the cancel culture community trying to pull her down as Toyin Abraham’s upcoming appearance in the Netflix House of Gaa has revealed.

By Friday 26 July, Netflix subscribers can catch the period piece House of Gaa before it probably hits the cinemas in the subsequent weeks.

The initial thought Abraham’s critics had before the streaming platform announced its latest delivery from Nigeria was for all her movies and productions to be boycotted but that is not what they will get to see.

As soon as a date for the upcoming film was announced yesterday via X, users started dishing out comments alluding to their keen interest in catching it in two weeks.

Tweets such as Thank you Netflix Nigeria for not being swayed by the noise of the mob and their politically motivated assault on Toyin Abraham by the X Profile Nwo-Diali made it obvious that there won’t be a division between the actress and her fans whatsoever.

If anything, the Malaika co-producer Abraham, who herself has been seen getting emotional, is even more loved. This showed in Kakanfo_ comment saying: Big salute to you guys. Because of Aunty Toyin that you showed, I will watch and re-watch and re-watch and re-watch the movie.

Toyin Abraham’s rift with social media voices this week happened after she took action against individuals who she alleged had been bullying her online because of her political views. Taking action meant her visit to a Nigeria Police Force office where she submitted information about the so-called bullies which then led to the arrest of a suspect’s mother and female sibling from their shop in the Lagos West Senatorial District.

A viral social media video broadcast she posted earlier in the week revealed the cyberbullied actress insisting that she didn’t intentionally ask for the mum and daughter to be arrested.

Back in the clip, Toyin Abraham seemed stressed out by her predicament, unlike her House of Gaa character in the trailer who mostly wore a jovial mood when the on-screen camera shifted focus to her. The actress took centre stage with other prominent Nollywood actors like Femi Branch, and Funke Akindele in the Bolanle Austen-Peters-directed movie which revisits an unforgettable era in the Yoruba monarchical system that took blood to build.

A ruthless Prime Minister desperate for revenge ferociously rises to power, stopping at nothing to become more powerful than the kings he served is how the Internet Movie Database synopsis described the 26 July-tied film.

Ever since Netflix’s Jagun Jagun success of the previous year, more producers have been applying their creativity in the making of new releases that invite a nostalgic feel because cinema audiences want this.

But this time, it is not just that longing for historical storytelling that is driving interest in the House of Gaa flick, the actress Toyin Abraham has a hand in the pre-release reception that the movie producer would probably not be complaining about.
