How to enjoy Christmas without burning out your budget

Keep the joy and the celebrations alive while ditching the stress of overspending this festive season.

Christmas has a way of making money disappear. Usually, everyone wants to shop for new things for Christmas “oblee”. New clothes, new shoes, new phone and almost everything new for that party.

But because it is the festive season, costs also quietly climb, especially transportation, which, according to Nairametrics, has risen to ₦25,500 to ₦73,500 depending on destination and vehicle type, with projections showing a 20 to 30 per cent increase during the peak travel period. If you missed the November Black Friday deals, the markets are already reflecting December pricing, and there is no mercy.

Shop early

The first rule of budget-friendly Christmas is to shop early. Waiting until the last minute is a recipe for overspending. Early shopping allows you to catch deals, compare prices, and avoid panic buys that drain your wallet.

For example, purchasing winter clothes in November often costs half of what they will sell for in mid-December, and buying toys early can save hundreds or even thousands of naira per item. By planning ahead, you have time to prioritise what really matters and avoid being swayed by impulsive purchases.

Consider some DIY gifts

Not every gift has to come with a price tag. DIY gifts are personal, thoughtful, and surprisingly impactful. A homemade candle, baked goods, or a custom photo album shows effort and care, often more than an expensive store-bought item. For instance, making a jar of spiced cookies or creating a scrapbook of shared memories costs much less than a branded gadget, but the sentimental value is higher. DIY gifts also save money and reduce the stress of last-minute shopping.

Only get involved in what you can afford

December comes with endless parties, outings, and social obligations, and it is easy to feel pressured to attend everything. The reality is that going to every event, buying drinks, or indulging in expensive food can quickly drain your wallet. The key is to know your limits and stick to them.

For example, if you cannot afford both a city club party and a family gathering in another town, pick the one that holds the most meaning for you. Opt for outings where transportation costs are manageable and meals are within your budget. You can still enjoy yourself without overspending by choosing accessible venues or taking turns hosting smaller, intimate gatherings.

Book early travel tickets for both buses and flights

Transportation is one of the biggest unexpected expenses during the season. Nairametrics reports fares can already reach ₦73,500 depending on the destination. Booking tickets early allows you to take advantage of lower prices and avoid premium charges during peak periods.

Whether you are travelling by bus or flight, planning in advance can save a significant amount.

Christmas does not have to be a financial headache. By shopping early, considering DIY gifts, participating only in what you can afford, and booking travel ahead of time, you can enjoy the season fully while keeping your wallet intact. The real gift is peace of mind, laughter, and memories without the stress of overspending. Remember, January is around the corner.
