In food and fashion, Nigerians’ creativity shines
Showcasing interesting places in Nigeria that are not normally covered by the media spotlight is a major objective at meiza.ng. It could be a fashion brand that is raising the game in modernizing traditional wears, making them relevant for the workplace. Or, a restaurant that, on the surface, is most indistinct but has a lot more footfalls than the fancy quick service types. We want to know what makes such bukas attractive to even the well-heeled.
The quest took us to Hajiya Rahila’s restaurant, near the Nassarawa State Golf Club. It’s a beehive of customers who throng there for the best madidi in town; perhaps, in the whole of Northern Nigeria! Patronage of the restaurant is similar to other bukas that don’t have intercontinental pretentions but where you’d find modern, trendy Nigerians queuing, sometimes with a plate in hand, for delicious local dishes. Adeyi Ochogu, who visited the restaurant recently, says madidi is the main attraction pulling the crowd into Hajiya Rahila’s. The number and calibre of customers asking for her madidi will make other restaurateurs green with envy.
Deborah Idowu, CEO, Posh Fashion, shows the same creative dexterity with aso oke, that age-old fabric that is traditional to the Yoruba, including the Igarra in Edo and Ebira in Kogi states. She is doing wonderful stuff with the fabric, leading to adoption by young people.
We have a team of young, driven and creative types across the country beaming their searchlight on entrepreneurial Nigerians proudly flying the Nigerian flag. In addition to interesting places to visit. We are prepared to give Nigerians a treat, week in, week out. Always log on to meiza.ng to get the latest instalment of these series.
