Lagos wants every noise maker to turn down the volume this Christmas

Although the holiday has been famously tagged Detty December, which is a time when Nigerians living abroad return home by year-end to reconnect, the city is cautioning all to gather and play with moderation.

Even without the Christmas holiday as a distraction, the megacity of Lagos has always been the sort where the people go about the day amid deafening noise and the city officials are trying to stop all that again.

Lagosians go about their daily living experiencing noise emitted from the roadside traffic as millions of vehicles head down to their destinations. Other times, it is the nightclubs sharing the same vicinity with residential areas that bring about their restless nights. Now, it seems that an example is being made out of the rule breakers.

The state-backed unit looking into that is the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) which has recently sealed off religious centres, clubs and trading venues where there have been an infringement. It ties in with making the city a safe and welcoming place to everyone but over the years, it has struggled due to the lack of compliance.

According to LASEPA, the stipulated level of noise in residential areas ought not to exceed 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. Those establishments that didn’t stick to this have been made to live with the consequence which is strictly having their premises sealed off until further notice.

In a tweet posted via X on Wednesday, 6 December, the agency confirmed that it “took decisive action by sealing several establishments, including hotels, bar, nightclubs, supermarket, mosque, and churches” all spread around the upscale Lekki district and Surulere on the Lagos mainland.

LASEPA says the measures were put in place to address the identified instances of noise pollution and other environmental violations which affect people’s health.

Although the Yuletide holiday has been famously tagged Detty December, which is a time when Nigerians living abroad return home to relax, the agency is cautioning that partying or having fun must be done with moderation.
