It’s no secret that Don Jazzy is a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. He has found and pushed into the limelight some of the biggest names in Nigerian music and has been around and relevant for most of the several evolutions of what is considered Nigerian music. His record label Mavin’s is an institution.
If there’s one thing Mavin is popular for, it is dropping all-star, awe-inspiring hits. Won Da Mo is yet another one of the popular record label’s famous hits.
The all-star track features Mavins’ giants, the likes of Ayra Starr (Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe), Bayanni (Abimbola Oladokun), Boy Spyce (Ugbekile David Osemeke), Crayon (Charles Chibueze Chukwu), Johnny Drille (John Ighodaro), LADIPOE (LADIPOE Eso), Magixx (Alexander Adelabu) and Rema (Divine Ikubor).
In celebration of its 10th year anniversary, the star-studded record label dropped Won Da Mo, a song of celebration, which is a Yoruba phrase that literally translates to “they know it”. The debut single was released as a teaser for all that is to come for the commemoration of their 10th year in operation, which includes a Mavin record’s sophomore album stipulated to be released on December 2, 2022 and an all-star concert before the close of the end of the year.
Trust Don Jazzy to have one of Naija’s top producers mix, master and produce Won Da Mo, Alexander Uwaifo better, known as “Andre Vibez” is a household name in Nigeria, the producer has so many hits under his umbrella and has worked with some of Nigeria’s and even South Africa’s hottest artists, Burna Boy’s Love, Damini, Nasty C’s Ivyson’s Army, Makhadzi’s Pain Ya Jealous, Simi’s To Be Honest, Rema’s Rave and Roses and Davido’s Stand Strong, to name a few.
Won Da Mo serves as a follow up to the previous Mavin release, Overdose. Won Da Mo is a creative euphony that allows the featured artistes to pop individually and in their own unique sounds. Each featured artiste did justice to their verse without overshadowing the other.
What most listeners are not aware of is Won Da Mo serves as a debut for Mavins’ latest addition, Abimbola Oladokun whose stage name is Bayanni. Honestly, this is one of the best debuts listeners have heard in a while as the newbie-artiste killed his verse of the hit-track.
As highlighted earlier, Won Da Mo is a song of celebration. It is an up-tempo track where each artiste expresses their love for working hard and enjoying the benefits that come with all the money they make, literally a classic case of “enjoying the fruits of your labour”.
The chorus roughly translates to a positive affirmation that means, “They know it and it is over/done,” a way of expressing to listeners how they have made it and there is no turning back.
Won Da Mo is a relatable song mostly because it reminds listeners of a height they aspire to be at someday or a height they have already attained, either way it either serves as a push to do more or a reminder to celebrate your wins (little or big).
