Movie Review: Cake, starring Nollywood’s best
By Didi Dan-Asisah
The cake is a cutesy, quirky, love story directed by Prosper Edesiri. It follows the story of a young baker Tomiwa (Tope Tedela) whose mother told him before she died that he would find love in his bakery. Tomiwa takes that prophecy to heart and when he meets Chalya Walshak (Sophie Alakija), he is convinced that she is the one. Tomiwa does not make his intentions known right away; instead, he plans to set up the perfect scene and sweep Chalya off her feet.
Things don’t go according to plan because before he gets around to this grand romantic gesture, Chalya announces to him that her fiancé has proposed to her and she would like him to make the wedding cake. Though Tomiwa is thrown for a loop, he quickly recovers and hatches a plan to make the best cake ever as a way to win the heart of his beloved.
The cake is a fun watch that doesn’t take itself too seriously and the audience has to keep that in mind because the premise of the movie is more than a bit questionable. It has beautiful cinematography and very vivid scenery. The titular food, cake, is front and centre and might leave the audience craving some. Most of the actors performed their roles beautifully; it is the kind of movie that is easy to watch.
However, Tomiwa, the lead character might have lost the audience after the first half of the film. His performance was lacking a little bit of something, probably courtesy of the plot watering down somewhere in the middle. The other actors held their own and added some much-needed colour to the film.
If you’re a fan of Rom Coms and meet-cutes, you will definitely get some satisfaction from Cake.
