Nigeria’s transport system goes cashless

Nigeria’s transport operations, it appears, is set for cashless transactions with the introduction of a new technology which will also impact on public security.

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has launched a technology to help reduce cash transactions in transport operations and improve public security. Tagged: RTEAN KarryGo, the project aims to revolutionise the transportation industry in Nigeria while also serving as a stimulus to the Federal Government’s renewed drive for a cashless policy.

Musa Maitakobi, President of RTEAN, who was represented by his Deputy, Muhammad Bushara, during the project launch said the technology would provide a seamless financial transaction process for the transiting Nigerians, in line with the present cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He noted that RTEAN had been known for introducing programmes and policies that impacted positively on the lives of its members and the general public.

He said: “This programme during implementation will put in check issues of insecurity, as all information about the travellers final destinations would have been collated from the electronic or digital manifest generated in the cause of processing their payment for the journey.” He added, “We will also have fast ticket purchasing and boarding, spontaneous travel and motivate the use of public transport, eliminate fraud and improve accountability will automatically issue e-receipt via SMS to eliminate paper ticket sales, among others.”

RTEAN KarryGo was developed by DiGIX Technologies Limited in collaboration with Wema Bank. Beyond making transport business more fashionable, the cashless transaction platform seeks to protect lives and properties.

Damola Akindolire, Founder of DiGIX Technologies Limited, disclosed that the platform would position the Nigeria public transport ahead of its peers in Africa and reinforce the country’s status as a leader in the continent. Also, Dauda Biu, Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, stressed the importance of safety on the roads, especially as the wet season approaches.

The involvement of key stakeholders in transport operations in view of technology import has set Nigeria’s transport system on the move to greater heights.
