As a result of the fuel subsidy removal announcement made on Monday, 29th of May, 2023, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to go on strike on Wednesday.

This decision was made after an emergency meeting was held by the union’s National Executive Council in Abuja on Friday, the 2nd of June, 2023. The NLC president, Mr. Joe Ajaero said the the Labour would embark on the strike if the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited(NNPCL) fails to revert the price of PMS (Premium Motor Spirit) to N184 per litre.

According to the NLC president,  “The NEC in session directed that the leadership of NLC should be cautious of negotiations with people without portfolios.

“It is destructive and until the government is properly constructed and the people who will negotiate with labour are people with mandate and capacity to convince the government of the day, such negotiations may not be valid wherever.

“Consequently, the NLC decided that if by Wednesday next week, the NNPCL, a private limited liability company that illegally announced a price regime in the oil sector, refuses to reverse, the NLC and all its affiliates will withdraw their services and commence protest nationwide until this is complied with.”

The Federal Government has said that they are considering an increase in minimum wage to improve the living realities of the masses and to match the current realities of the economy.

Amidst the controversies and sudden hike in prices, the living of not just the common man, but every class in Nigeria has been suddenly disrupted and no one can tell for how long. It seems the current situation of things have come to stay and Nigerians might once again be forced to adapt to the current happenings in the country.
