No MPox virus deaths in Nigeria yet and here is how people can keep it that way

MPox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that has gradually garnered global attention since the first human case was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Despite no deaths being recorded in Nigeria at the moment, the virus has inspired a wave of global alertness since recent outbreaks ensued. A total of 39 confirmed cases have been recorded in the country since the year broke, says the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) urging citizens to observe some steps.

What this suggests is that it’s crucial to stay informed about the common signs of the disease and how to prevent it. To do that, here are five common public advisories to note both for the young and old.

Common Signs of MPox

  1. Fever: A sudden spike in body temperature is often the first sign of infection.
  2. Skin Rash: The appearance of a rash, which may progress to raised bumps and fluid-filled blisters, is a hallmark of MPox.
  3. Swollen Lymph Nodes: Enlarged lymph nodes, especially in the neck, armpits, or groin, can indicate an immune response to MPox.
  4. Headache: Persistent headaches may occur in the early stages of the disease.
  5. Muscle Aches and Backache: General body aches, including muscle soreness and back pain, are common symptoms.

How to Avoid MPox

Even in regions like Nigeria, where MPox has not been prevalent, taking preventive measures is essential. How to be watchful entails minding association with wildlife or pets, in addition to other items on our checklist.
