About “Charm”
Riding on the wave of his recently recognised status as one of Africa’s biggest stars, Rema released Charm. The song starts with a soothing and sultry beat and then opens with lines that screams “let me love you, and take care of you”. The song is quite clear on what Rema wants – a girl to love, just because he can and because he has the money to. The opener “Come here, wetin dey worry you? Bring body make I rock am, yeah”.

The song also carries a self-assured tone, with Rema hinting that there is no reason for the said girl in the song not to like him or be with him. Rema also echoes his financial prowess which would enable him to take care of her well, and asks her not to be proud. To him, that is his “charm”.
The song chorus which then focuses on the girl’s body and sexy features goes thus:
See body oh (see body, see body)
Egbami oh (egbami, egbami oh)
E dey burst my bololo (e dey burst my bololo)
Me self, me oh
Me, I don jam wetin pass me
The lyrics and hooks of the song are quite catchy, and the song did not waste time in becoming a famous hit on Tiktok. For a catchy song with good success, one would have expected the music video of the song to be catchy too. The music video is quite bland, and only features Rema’s silhouette dancing with a girl shaking her backside in a sultry way. Nonetheless, the song lives up to its hype.
Opinion
As the global hitmaker that he is, it is safe to say that Rema delivered on the song’s melody, beats and relatable lyrics. With the wide reception of Charm, it might top more global charts in the next couple of weeks.
However, we feel that Rema has sung too many songs that carry alike messages and vibe. His songs like Bounce, Booty Bounce and even Calm Down have the same “giving a girl loving with my money” trope which is becoming quite boring and repetitive. But we guess it works for him, so that is alright.
The music video of the song also showed a lack of effort in delivering a worthy visual for such a widely received song and his growing popularity in the international scene. Perhaps, more effort should have been put into the video to deliver something just worthy of the song and who Rema is.
Charm is streaming widely on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music. Go give it a listen.
