Super Falcons once again show Banyana who the real African queen is

Nigeria edges South Africa in a nail-biting semi-final clash as Super Falcons secure WAFCON final spot in a thrilling fashion.

Tuesday night’s edge-of-your-seat encounter, which saw Nigeria defeating defending champions South Africa’s Banyana 2-1 in a dramatic match that tested nerves and national pride in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final. A winning goal by Michelle Alozie. It was survival, glory, and the soul of a team hungry to reclaim a crown last won in 2018.

The stakes were high, and from the first whistle at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, it was clear that the match was not going to be a walk in the park for either side. South Africa, fresh off a penalty shootout win against Senegal and with one day less rest, still came in full force. But it was Nigeria who drew first blood

Rasheedat Ajibade, right on the stroke of half-time, stepped up with a low driven penalty after a handball from Banyana defender Bambanani Mbane. This resulted in Nigeria going into the break with a 1-0 lead, but far from safe.

South Africa came out stronger in the second half and found the equaliser in the 60th minute through Linda Mothalo, who coolly converted a penalty after Osinachi Ohale tugged Hidah Magaia in the box.

What followed was a battle of wills. Substitutions, injuries, near misses, and desperate defending kept the tension just on the edge. With the match inching towards extra time, the Super Falcons needed something to tip the scale.

As at 90+4th minute, Michelle Alozie sent a lofted delivery into the box, which was perfectly timed. With South Africa’s keeper Andile Dlamini caught in a no-woman’s land and the Nigerian forwards charging in, the ball bounced awkwardly and snuck into the net, and the bench erupted.

This win was a vindication for Nigerians because it meant that the Super Falcons are now a step closer to “Mission X,” their quest to lift a record extending 10th WAFCON title. They will face host Morocco in Saturday’s final in Rabat, with the weight of a nation behind them. The Falcons path has not been flawless; it has been full of fight as the team continues to deliver gritty, fearless performances, unbothered by the noise.

With this win, the Super Falcons have reminded us why they remain queens of African football. But the mission is not over yet. As they head into the final against Morocco come Saturday, no matter where you are, at work, at home, or a gathering, do not forget to raise your voice because the Falcons need the roar of a nation behind them.

Up Super Falcons!
