By Naomi Salami

Movie Title: The Order of Things

Release Date: 10, June,2022

Runtime: 1 hour 38 mins.

Director: Sidney Esiri

Background

An almost accurate story of how some things are being run in households way back, and even in modern-day Nigeria. The Order of Things tells the story of two brothers who are completely different. While the younger brother had clear life goals and timelines, the elder brother was unbothered, lived life at his own pace, and was socially inept. Unfortunately for the youngest brother, his dream of getting married to his chosen lady wasn’t approved by the mother because of her traditional beliefs on how things should be done.

The Order of Things, directed by Sidney Esiri popularly known as Dr. Sid, is the former Mavin Records artiste’s first attempt at movie production and this marks the beginning of many works of his to come.

The Plot

Demi, played by Obi Maduegbuna, is your typical introverted game developer with a socially awkward way of life. He spends his time playing video games or working on new features to add to his own game development. His brother Tunde played by Timini Egbuson is the exact opposite. Tunde set out specific life plans and deadlines and worked hard to achieve everything. But his plans came to a halt when his mother (Binta Ayo Mogaji) refused to accept the marriage on the basis of hierarchical levels in the family. She insisted that his elder brother, Demi get married first as that was the order of things.

This resulted in the brothers meeting a dating expert who arranged various dates for Demi but it all ended in disappointments. Fortunately for Tunde, Demi was able to meet a lady who piqued his interest and accepted his flaws and quirkiness despite his belief that there is no woman out there for him.

The Casts

The casting and acting are average at best as the actors gave their best to the development of their various characters. Timini Egbuson and Obi Maduebuna were amazing with their parts and they played the character.

Drawbacks

Plot holes and inconsistencies were the banes of this movie. Little details were left out and it seemed they were more bothered with how the story ends rather than the journey. The transition scene of drinks being poured on Demi to water being spilt on him left an important detail out of showing where the drink came from as there was no one in the room when he jerked up or sign of any cup or water on the floor.

Also, some of the dialogue felt cringe and there was an obvious advertisement of 5 Alive products in almost every scene of the movie. They could have been more subtle with the advertising.

Opinion

Despite these drawbacks, The Order of Things is a movie that gives one comedic relief, especially after a long day from work or a weekend must-watch. It has a vital moral lesson on old societal norms still in existence in some homes today and its effect.

The movie does well in its opening sequence in the form of a game-opening sequence and it gives one some insight into the life of the main character even before the movie starts.

If you haven’t watched The Order of Things, it is currently streaming on ‘Netflix’ and it is a must-watch.

Naomi Salami is a Content Manager with Meiza Nigeria.
