Tyla’s light shines the brightest again at 2024 BET Awards – Looking at how Nigerian musicians featured
So far in 2024, the crown for the shiniest beacon of African music on a world stage has gone to a South African.

For the African musicians whose exceptional output made them nominees at the 2024 BET Awards, winning the Best International Act is what would have made it all worth it, and this time, it was Tyla who claimed the category when the winner was announced at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday 30.
Standing on the stage that had the American black actress Taraji P. Henson playing her third BET host role, the South African R&B singer Tyla possibly caused an upset for Nigerian Afropop gods Ayra Starr and Asake who would no doubt have wanted it to be their names that were being announced as the winner.

As far as the Best International Act category goes, only Nigeria and South Africa represented the continent against France, Brazil and the United Kingdom.
So far in 2024, the crown for the shiniest beacon of African music on a world stage has gone to Tyla. She did this at the Grammys on 4 February at the Crypto Arena also in Los Angeles. There, she won the Best African Music category making its debut because of her song Water which isn’t lacking millions of streams.
Back at the Peacock Theater, there was space for a Nigerian segment to have its stage nonetheless for the inspiration she brings. The winners’ list after this line would show who got which and for what.
