The Significance of the Jackson Annual Lecture
The Jackson Annual Lecture is named after John Payne Jackson, an American-Liberian journalist who founded and edited the Lagos Weekly Record in 1891, one of the earliest influential newspapers in pre-independent Nigeria. This historical connection underscores the lecture’s dedication to promoting journalistic excellence and advancing communication studies.
Established in 1961, UNN’s Mass Communication Department was originally known as Jackson College of Journalism and was the first institution to offer courses in journalism in sub-Saharan Africa.
The lecture series continues to honour this rich legacy by providing a platform for discussing crucial topics related to media and communication.
Why Dr. Obinna Ezeobi is the Right Choice
Dr. Ezeobi’s expertise and career, which spans over two decades in the oil and gas industry, media, and advertising sector, make him a highly suitable guest speaker for the Jackson Annual Lecture. He holds a doctorate in Energy Communications from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and has extensive experience in the field.

Prof. Ukonu emphasised the guest lecturer’s deep knowledge of the subject matter and conveyed high expectations that the lecture would feature effective strategies for promoting sustainable development. Dr. Ezeobi is also anticipated to provide valuable insights and perspectives on effective local content implementation, aligning perfectly with the lecture’s theme.
The Mass Communication Department at UNN views Dr. Ezeobi’s participation as an invaluable opportunity to enrich the academic festivity. His lecture is expected to inspire and educate attendees, contributing to the ongoing discourse on national development and strategic communications.
