What to do if you are a Nigerian moneybag like Daisy Danjuma

A fully equipped maternity centre in Edo State is a urging for Nigerians with means to contribute personally to development in their communities.

When social welfare isn’t forthcoming enough, philanthropists and high-net-worth personalities step in. Just like the people in Benin have found with the establishment of the Merry Ehanire Mother and Child Hospital in Edo State by Senator Daisy Ehanire Danjuma.

It follows a long Danjuma family tradition with such innovation. Her husband is the former Nigerian military general and minister of defence, Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma who also runs the TY Danjuma Foundation.

The fully equipped mother and child hospital was inaugurated on Saturday, 2 December 2023. It was built to enable access to maternity care in Edo State, her state of origin.

The hospital commemorates Senator Daisy Danjuma's mother.

To ensure smoothness and sustainability, Development Africa, a humanitarian international non-governmental organisation working across Nigeria to enable optimal growth in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, is managing the facility.

Governor Godwin Obaseki was at the inauguration where he mused about the exceptionality of the hospital. Tweeting via X, he said more of such establishments are on the way, but it has certainly been remarkable to have this sort of template to build on.

Not only did Senator Danjuma sponsor the development of the maternity care centre, but she had also recently constructed a female hostel at the University of Benin that would house up to 900 students. The same unit blocks will be replicated for male undergraduates.

There is a screaming need for many more Nigerians with the means to follow in her exemplary footsteps. Truly, we need many more Daisy Danjuma, even if they are not as comely as the senator is.
