This Valentine’s Day, 3 Nollywood romcoms show us the bittersweetness tied with dating a bad boy
Some supercharged movie scenes and storylines capture the instances where women have found themselves knowingly submitting to risky romance.
You know that popular saying that claims ladies prefer bad guys, the cunning and annoying ones, as they seem sweeter at handling ladies compared to the cool, calm, and collected ones? Well, how true is this saying is what we are about to uncover through Nollywood romcoms on this Valentine’s Day.
Dating a “bad boy” can be an exciting and thrilling experience for some, but it comes with risks. This sort of explains why it is considered bittersweet. It’s important to note that not all bad boys are the same, and individual experiences can vary.
As we approach this year’s Valentine’s Day, we are relying on supercharged scenes and storylines that capture the instances where some ladies were caught up in love and romance with the opposite, despite being aware of their bad boy characters and perhaps seeing the consequences.
Let’s take a look at Dinner, a 2016 movie that was recently released to Netflix in January. It reveals the hidden truth behind two different couples.
The bad boy character Ritchie, played by Deyemi Okanlawon, was revealed in a lustful thirst for two ladies, one loved the wild thrills while the other seemed to have been played. When an audience watches this one, they are taking on a journey that brings morals to a test.
Another scenario can be found in the popular movie Sugar Rush (2019) featuring a trio of sisters known as the Sugar sisters. One of the sisters, Sola Sugar, portrayed by Bisola Aiyeola, was in a romantic relationship with the character Andy, played by Tobi Bakre, the bad boy in a crime action comedy. Andy was known as a notorious troublemaker, tout, and reckless individual in the community yet Sola Sugar was hot for him. Only Andy’s death could separate them.

Our last cut is the 2021 Kunle Afolayan-directed movie A Naija Christmas, set in the holiday season. The picture follows the lives of three sons trying to fulfil their dying mother’s wish.
In their quest, they were required to get married to claim a prize. One of the sons, a playboy character Ugo, portrayed by Kunle Remi, was eager to win. He had several ladies flocking around him but he didn’t reciprocate to all with the required seriousness. Only displaying reckless fun and being mischievous was his fetish.
Somehow, he found himself in a relationship with Ajike, portrayed by Segilola Ogidan, who clung to him bad boy or not! Although their romance was rough at the start, later on, it brought in the goods.
