NiMet warns of dust haze, thunderstorms across Nigeria
The agency forecasts worsening atmospheric conditions over northern and central regions in the coming days.

Nigeria is set to experience a mix of dust haze, cloudiness, and isolated thunderstorms over the next three days as atmospheric conditions worsen across several regions, according to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet warned that dusty conditions currently affecting parts of the country will persist from Sunday through Tuesday, with more severe haze expected by midweek.
The agency said moderate dust haze is forecast over the northern region on Monday and Tuesday, with conditions expected to deteriorate further by Wednesday.
“NiMet predicted moderate dust haze on Monday over the northern region throughout the forecast period,” the agency said, adding that similar conditions would persist on Tuesday. By Wednesday, it said thick dust haze is expected to dominate the region.
The central region is also expected to remain under dusty conditions throughout the forecast period. NiMet said thick to moderate dust haze will affect the area across all days covered by the outlook.
“NiMet predicted thick dust haze over the central region throughout the forecast period,” it stated, noting that visibility could be significantly reduced.

In the southern region, inland cities are expected to experience moderate dust haze, while coastal areas will see a mix of sunshine, cloud patches, and isolated thunderstorms.
“Sunny skies with patches of clouds are anticipated over the coastal region with prospects of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rains over parts of Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers states later in the day,” the agency said.
NiMet explained that suspended dust particles in the atmosphere could affect air quality, increasing the risk of breathing difficulties and other health challenges. It warned that dusty conditions may worsen existing respiratory conditions, particularly for people with asthma and related illnesses.
The agency advised vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with underlying health issues, to limit outdoor exposure and take necessary precautions.
It also cautioned motorists that dust haze could reduce visibility on highways, urging drivers to slow down and exercise extra care, especially if rainfall occurs.
For aviation operations, NiMet advised airlines to rely on detailed, airport-specific weather reports to guide flight planning and reduce the risk of weather-related disruptions.
