How Mohbad became a shadow of himself after NDLEA agents drugged him
An appearance at a Coroner's Inquest revealed Mohbad's healthy state of being experiencing a dip after meeting with the NDLEA and then things only got worse.
Most of Ilerioluwa ‘Mohbad’ Aloba’s life as an artiste has been filled with trauma. While trying to complete his metamorphosis as an Afrobeats musician, he was alleged to have met with betrayal and abuse by officials of Nigeria’s drug law enforcement agency whose officials gave him an unknown substance that changed him forever.
A coroner’s inquest sat on Tuesday, 7 November, in the Ikorodu district of Lagos to get a deeper insight into the situations that occurred leading to Mohbad’s death in early September. The singer’s widow, Omowunmi Aloba, at the gathering, revealed all she had witnessed. That included her husband’s deteriorating inner peace and what led to that. This was where the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) featured.

Based on Mrs Aloba’s statement at the inquest, NDLEA officials who arrested the deceased back in February 2022 showed a thirst for brutality, which led to the changes noticed in her husband after the incident, which also involved amnesia or loss of memory. But his latest experience of turmoil came on 11 September, the eve of his death. The tragedy started with a fight between Mohbad and one of the key suspects which led to a different suspect, a nurse, being invited over to treat him.
“Prime Boy and Mohbad started fighting and I went to get his workers to come and separate them and by the time I came back, I met that people had separated them already,” the wife tells the inquest.
“During the fight”, she adds, “Mohbad sustained a minor injury at his elbow when he hit the window of the car. The nurse who injected Mohbad has been treating him for two years.
“The nurse injected Mohbad on his shoulder. After the February 22, 2022, NDLEA incident, Mohbad became fearful and refused to go to the hospital because his head was hit with a gun, by NDLEA.
“I was beaten and pushed inside the gutter because I confronted and questioned the NDLEA [about] why they harassed my husband. He was given [a] substance by the NDLEA [and] ever since then he has not been himself.”
Among five suspects identified, interrogated and later detained in relation to Mohbad’s death, one stands out in terms of culpability. That is the quack auxiliary nurse who administered a combination of intravenous injections to the deceased following an injury he sustained during a post-concert brawl.
That was the new evidence that was revealed on Friday, 6 October, at a press briefing that was anchored by Lagos State Police Commissioner, Idowu Owohunwa. Although there are five main suspects, the nurse Miss Feyisayo Ogedengbe took actions that are directly linked to a deterioration of health and the subsequent passing of the late singer.

While Mrs Omowunmi Aloba’s account might have proved an existing relationship between the deceased and the nurse, the police will be more interested in prosecuting her culpability in offering health services without the requisite qualification.
In the meantime, the curtain has been drawn on many unfulfilled dreams. Mohbad once had a vision for his infant son, Liam, which involved an early Canadian life in six months’ time. His short-lived life ending the age of 27, will alter that.
