Nigerian artists are becoming regulars on the Coachella stage

What started as breakthrough moments is now becoming a steady presence for Nigerian artists on the global festival circuit.

Nigerian artists are becoming a regular part of the lineup at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, one of the most influential music festivals globally, as Afrobeats continues to expand beyond its traditional markets.

Coachella is a two-weekend music and arts festival held annually in Indio, California, known for its mix of global headliners, emerging acts, fashion, and pop culture influence. Since its launch in 1999, it has grown into a major commercial platform in the global music industry, drawing over 100,000 attendees daily and generating significant media and streaming attention for performing artists.

Held annually in California, Coachella attracts over 100,000 attendees daily across two weekends and serves as a key platform for artists looking to build international audiences. Its lineup is closely followed by labels, promoters, and streaming platforms, making it a strong indicator of global music trends.

Nigeria’s entry into that space became more visible in 2019 when Burna Boy and Mr Eazi were included in the lineup, marking one of the early moments Afrobeats gained structured exposure at the festival. At the time, both artists were already building international audiences, but Coachella provided a larger, more concentrated global stage.

From breakthrough appearances to consistent bookings

Since that moment, Nigerian artists have appeared more frequently across different editions of the festival. Fireboy DML performed in 2022, becoming one of the younger Nigerian acts to reach that stage, while Tems has become one of the most recognisable Nigerian performers at Coachella.

Tems’ performances have extended beyond solo sets. She performed “Essence” alongside Wizkid, a track that became the first Nigerian song to enter the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 and earned a Grammy nomination. The remix featuring Justin Bieber further increased its global reach and visibility.

Nigerian DJs are also part of the expansion. DJ Spinall has performed at the festival, reflecting how Nigeria’s music export now includes DJs and producers alongside recording artists.

Afrobeats growth is driving global festival demand

The increasing presence of Nigerian artists at Coachella is tied to the global growth of Afrobeats. Spotify data shows the genre has grown by more than 500 percent globally between 2017 and 2023, with key markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, and parts of Europe.

This growth has been supported by streaming platforms, international collaborations, and consistent touring. Nigerian artists are now regularly featured on global charts, and their music is increasingly included in mainstream playlists outside Africa.

By 2024 and into 2025, Nigerian acts were no longer appearing as isolated performers. Multiple artists from the country were booked across different stages, reflecting broader acceptance of Afrobeats within global festival programming.

Looking ahead, Davido is expected to feature in upcoming Coachella lineups, which would further extend Nigeria’s presence at the festival and reinforce a pattern of repeat representation.
