Playboy further cements Fireboy DML’s stardom
Billboard’s March R&B/Hip Hop Rookie of the month, Fireboy DML is back following hot on the heels of global phenomenon, Peru with Playboy. Fireboy is no stranger to praise for his relaxed approach to the R&B and Afropop genres. He imbues his songs with an effortless cool that translates beyond the beats into an everyday anthem.
Playboy is no different from his already exceptional body of work. He sings to a girl who he’s taken with, with lyrics like
Girl, don’t flex with the boy, your body is a mad ting she wanna roll with the mandem when I drop, yunno it’s an anthem… oof!”
The repetition of “Oof!” at the end of each chorus line is a fun addition to what is otherwise not a very danceable track.
Playboy has massive replay value with each listen making the listener like the song just a bit more. A definite advantage to Fireboy because it ensures that a listener will probably pay attention to this longer than an instant hit.
While some people on social media have compared Fireboy with Afro Beats legend Wizkid or R&B powerhouse Wande Coal, we wouldn’t go as far as saying that but on Playboy and his other work, we get the feeling that he is only just starting his game. There seems to be so much more to come from him.
