“You’re Drinking Shit Water” – Lagos Warns Lekki Residents

Untreated sewage is seeping into boreholes in Lekki and Lagos officials say it’s already in your drinking water.

If you live in Lekki and get your water from a borehole, it might be time to double-check what’s really coming out of your tap.

The Lagos State Government has raised serious concerns about the quality of water being consumed in the Lekki area.

At a recent stakeholders’ meeting, Mahmood Adegbite, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of Drainage Services, stated that many residents who rely on boreholes in Lekki may unknowingly be consuming sewage-contaminated water.

“Everyone digging boreholes within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water,’” he said.

According to Adegbite, the problem is caused by untreated wastewater leaking into underground water sources — a situation made worse by poor drainage systems and rapid development in the area.

He acknowledged ongoing efforts to reduce flooding and improve infrastructure, but stressed that more work is still needed, especially in waste and water management.

“If we are able to treat all the wastewater within this axis, which we have plans for, we should be able to eradicate any form of disease that might result from non-treatment of our waste,” he added.

His warning comes in the wake of unusually heavy rainfall in Lagos, with Adegbite noting that complex environmental challenges are making both flooding and water contamination harder to manage.

Lekki’s drainage and water issues have been in the spotlight before, but now, the message is urgent and clear: check your water.
