For a long time, the conversation around Nollywood’s biggest cinema hits has followed a familiar pattern. Big action movies, epic productions, festive season releases and star-studded comedies are usually the ones expected to dominate the box office. That is why the success of Call of My Life has caught many people by surprise.

It is not an action movie. It is not part of a franchise. It did not rely on spectacular visuals or an oversized marketing campaign. Instead, it told a simple story about love, heartbreak and second chances, and audiences kept showing up for it.

Directed by Dammy Twitch and produced by Blessing Uzzi for BluHouse Studios, Call of My Life follows Soluchi, played by Uzoamaka Power, whose world falls apart after her boyfriend, Kalu, played by Zubby Michael, ends their relationship. Just as she begins to pick up the pieces, an unexpected work call introduces her to Eli, a Ghanaian news anchor played by Andrew Yaw Bunting. What starts as a casual conversation gradually grows into a relationship that helps Soluchi find her confidence again and open herself to love.

The story is strengthened by a cast that understands its assignment. Beverly Osu plays Zimuzo, the dependable friend every heartbreak story needs, while Nkem Owoh and Patience Ozokwor bring warmth, humour and emotional depth as Soluchi’s parents. Their performances give the story a sense of family that makes the emotional moments feel earned.

There is nothing particularly groundbreaking about the plot. Nollywood has told stories about broken relationships, unexpected love and difficult choices for years. The difference is that Call of My Life never tries too hard to impress. It allows its characters to breathe, gives them believable conversations and lets the emotions develop naturally. That honesty is what audiences connected with. The numbers tell the rest of the story.

By the end of June, the movie had crossed the ₦600 million mark at the Nigerian box office. It has since earned more than ₦672 million, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood movie of 2026 and one of the biggest local cinema successes of all time.

The movie that refused to disappear

Most Nollywood movies have a very short window to prove themselves. If audiences do not turn out during the opening weekend, cinemas quickly make room for newer releases.

Call of My Life went in the opposite direction.

It opened with about ₦77 million in its first weekend and crossed ₦300 million within two weeks. Instead of slowing down, the numbers kept growing. By early June, it was already closing in on ₦500 million, thanks largely to positive reviews, social media conversations and recommendations from people who had already seen it.

That steady growth is what makes its box office run stand out. The movie was not carried by opening weekend excitement alone. It kept attracting new audiences because people genuinely enjoyed it and encouraged others to watch it.

A story people could relate to

One of the biggest strengths of Call of My Life is that it does not try to turn every scene into a dramatic spectacle.

At its heart, the movie is about experiences that many people understand. Heartbreak. Moving on. Friendship. Family. Learning to trust again.

Soluchi is not written as someone who has all the answers. She is hurt, sometimes stubborn, sometimes unsure of herself, and that makes her easy to connect with. Eli brings a quiet confidence to the story without becoming the perfect fairytale hero, while Kalu reminds viewers that not every relationship deserves another chance.

The chemistry between Uzoamaka Power and Andrew Yaw Bunting gives the romance its emotional weight, but the supporting cast deserves just as much credit. Nkem Owoh and Patience Ozokwor make every family scene feel natural, Beverly Osu brings sincerity to her role as Soluchi’s closest friend, and Broda Shaggi delivers moments of humour without pulling the story away from its emotional centre.
