Ebonyi Flood Tragedy: 8 Dead, 3 Bodies Recovered, 5 Still Missing
Torrential downpour devastates Afikpo community, leaving deaths, destruction, and missing persons in its wake.

A devastating flood has swept through Enohia Itin in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, claiming eight lives and leaving several others unaccounted for. The disaster, which began on Friday, August 1, 2025, originated from a plantain plantation and has impacted over 800 residents, destroying farmlands and livelihoods.
According to the Councillor for Itim Ward, Francis Abani Okpani, three of the victims’ bodies have been recovered, while search efforts continue for the remaining five. Among the dead were three children.

Afikpo LGA Chairman, Chief Timothy Nwachi, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to grieving families. He promised that the local government would work with state and federal agencies to provide relief materials and humanitarian aid to affected households.
Nwachi recalled that the Federal Ministry of Environment had earlier identified Afikpo as one of the Nigerian communities at high risk of flooding in 2025. He urged residents to adopt climate change projections into flood prevention strategies, maintain functional drainage systems, and keep waterways free from debris to reduce future risks.
